Alice

hi My name is Jenny. My favorite color is PURPLE and ONE DIRECTION is my favorite band. I made this webpage at Alice in Computationland camp at LSU. On this webpage, I am going to write about what I did this week at camp.

Day One

Monday, June 18, 2012
today is my first day at Alice Camp! :) At first I didn't want to come because I didn't know anyone here, but then I had fun meeting new people and making friends. Our instructor, Mrs. Kathy, told us about herself and then we all introduced ourselves. Today, we learned about webpages and how to make them. It was kind of hard because we had to write in the html language. Also, three guest speakers came to talk to us. They told us how important it is to have good study habits and why we should choose science as a major in college. For lunch I had pizza and sprite. I had so much fun at camp today!

Smiley face ;)

day two

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

today is the second day at camp. we started the day by working on our webpage.s. this time, instead of using Komodo like before, we're using an editor called Kompozer. It is much easier because we don't hAVE TO USE THE HTML LANGUAGE. All we have to do is type exactly what we want onto the page. Also, we got to make our own movies today using a program called Alice.. You can download it at http://alice.org. First we had to watch a few tutorials, then we were on our own. I made my movie about astronauts landing on the moon. My movie is at the bottom of the page. It was so fun learning how to make an animation! An LSU professor came today and showed us some of his projects. One of the projects was a table with memory foam. Whenever you put your hands on the foam, lines from a poem appeared where your hands were. another one were these small boxes that made music when you stacked them on top of each other. He also showed us that you can make music using a computer. It was so cool!

Day three

wednesday, JUne 20, 2012
This is the third day of camp. Mrs. Kathy showed us a new program that lets you make your own lego creations. I had fun creating stuff with legos. You can make your own at http://ldd.lego.com/en-us/. I continued working on my Alice movie to make it even better. For lunch we had fried catfish. Also, we learned how to put our webpages on the internet so that everyone can see it. Two more guest speakers came to talk to us today. The first one talked about transistors and what's inside computers. The second one talked about what the universe was made of and how it was created. He also talked about the building blocks of matter, and I thought it was pretty interesting. They also showed us a movie on the relative size of objects compared to the universe. The movie started with a man laying down on a picnic mat. THen the camera kept zooming out until it went out of the universe. After, the camera zoomed in until you could see the man again, except it still kept zooming in into his hand until it went to the nucleus of an atom. It was really cool and also really weird.

This is my lego creation of nyan cat.

Day Four

Thursday, JUne 21, 2012
TOday is the fourth day at camp. Mrs. Kathy let us have 15 minutes of computer time to do whatever we wanted. This morning we had a guest speaker. She talked about why it was a good idea to major in science. she even made a list of the top ten reasons. One reason was that you earn lots of money. ANother is that there are many jobs you can choose from. For lunch we had jambalaya. We made our interviews today using iMovie. my partner was Reshma. It was really fun learning more about her and telling her about myself.  My interview is at the bottom of the page. More college guest speakers came today. THey told us what they were studying in college, what they wanted to be when they were our age and why they changed their mind, and why they wanted to be an engineer. THey also told us why more women should study science. After, WE got to play with something called plink, where you can play music with your friends from the computer. You can try it at http://labs.dinahmoe.com/plink/.

This is plink.

Day Five: The final day

Friday, june 22, 2012
Today is the last day at the Alice in Computationland Camp. I'm really sad because I will miss all the new friends I made. I really liked this camp and I learned a lot from it, like how to make a webpage and how to make a movie. Mrs. KAthy let us play on our computers for a long time today. I finished my webpage and made it just the way I wanted it to be. We will have a competition to see who made the best webpage. At about 2:00, we went to see the suercomputers. We had to walk all the way to the Frey building. On the way back, we stopped by the Dairy Store and got some ice cream.
